Appointment of Guy Wolf as Associate Director, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science
The leadership of Université de Montréal's affiliated hospital research centre (the CRCHUM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Guy Wolf as Associate Director, Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, at the CRCHUM, as well as Chief Scientist, Artificial Intelligence, within the CHUM Research and Innovation Directorate. He will also join the CRCHUM as a regular researcher in the Imaging and Engineering Research Theme as of October 2026. In addition, he will serve as Scientific Director of CITADEL, the CHUM’s scientific platform dedicated to artificial intelligence (AI) and biomedical data analysis.
Guy Wolf is an internationally recognized researcher in artificial intelligence, machine learning and biomedical data analysis. He is a Full Professor in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at Université de Montréal, a Core Academic Member at Mila, and a Canada CIFAR AI Chair.
His research spans a wide range of fields. He is particularly interested in the intersection of AI and health, including tools that facilitate the exploratory analysis of biomedical data in areas such as single-cell multiomics, drug discovery, and neuroscience.
Leading-edge expertise in AI and data science
His recruitment creates significant, transformative opportunities for the CHUM and marks an important step toward closer collaboration with Mila and Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Arts and Science.
For Hugo Larochelle, Scientific Director of Mila, Guy Wolf’s arrival at the CHUM and the CRCHUM is excellent news for the advancement of AI in health care:
“His cutting-edge expertise in machine learning applied to medicine will be a major asset in advancing AI-enabled medical research, a field poised to transform our societies through potentially groundbreaking scientific discoveries.”
According to Sylvain Baillet, Director of the CRCHUM, this appointment represents a major step forward in strengthening the CRCHUM's expertise in AI and fostering closer ties with Mila:
“We are delighted to welcome Guy Wolf to the CHUM and the CRCHUM at a pivotal moment for the responsible application of data science and AI in health care. The expertise of his new research team, based at the CRCHUM, will significantly accelerate the translation of research into innovation in these fields, transform hospital operations, build new research and development partnerships with industry, and strengthen our strategic ties with Mila.”
His arrival is also welcomed by Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Arts and Science, a key partner in the development of data science and artificial intelligence. Frédéric Bouchard, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Science at Université de Montréal, added:
“We have been at the forefront of developing responsible artificial intelligence. We now aspire to be at the forefront of its positive application across different sectors of society. Guy Wolf’s career path is an excellent example of how deep expertise in mathematics and data science can be brought together with health research through meaningful collaboration. This kind of interdisciplinary integration is essential if we are to advance knowledge, train a new generation of researchers able to work across disciplines, and ensure that our strengths in AI generate tangible and positive benefits for humanity.”
Shaping the future of AI in health care at the CHUM and the CRCHUM
In his new roles, Guy Wolf will be responsible for shaping and implementing the CHUM and CRCHUM research and innovation strategy for AI and data science. He will also help develop new interdisciplinary collaborations focused on the responsible and innovative use of health data.
Alongside this strategic role, he will establish his own research team at the CRCHUM. His work will focus on guided representation learning for exploring complex, high-throughput, high-dimensional biomedical data (big data), as well as the development of tools to facilitate exploratory analysis, particularly in single-cell multiomics, drug discovery, medical imaging, and neuroscience. More broadly, his team will aim to generate new knowledge and help improve care through AI.
Guy Wolf sees this appointment as a unique opportunity to strengthen the connections between artificial intelligence, biomedical research, and clinical practice:
“Montreal’s research ecosystem and the Pan-Canadian AI Strategy have invested heavily to establish global leadership in health AI. This new role offers an exciting opportunity to turn that investment into tangible benefits for health care in Quebec and beyond, and to steer research toward the challenges with the greatest potential to increase longevity and improve population well-being.
After more than a decade devoted to developing biomedical data exploration tools grounded in real-world problems, I am thrilled to take on this role at the CHUM and to build bridges between computational research, biomedical sciences, and clinical practice to help shape the future of health care.”
