Four members of the CHUM Research Centre (CRCHUM) student community were awarded a scholarship for their advanced studies, one of the most highly coveted in Canada: the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships. Each recipient will receive $50,000 per year, disbursed over three years.

In 2025, 166 Vanier scholarships were awarded, a total amount of 24.9 million, by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), or the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC).

Vanier scholarship recipients:

Valérie Chauvin, PhD candidate in Dr. Amal Abdel-Baki’s team (Neuroscience research theme), received a scholarship from the CIHR for her research proposal Dynamique entre l’insécurité alimentaire, les habitudes de vie et le rétablissement chez les personnes ayant des troubles psychotiques.

Mathieu Chayer, PhD candidate in Dr. Zhi Wang’s team (Imaging and Engineering research theme), received a scholarship from the NSERC for his thesis titled Modélisation biomécanique de la décompression indirecte et du risque d’affaissement dans les fusions intervertébrales lombaires obliques.

Catherine Côté, PhD candidate working with Gabrielle Pagé’s team (Innovation and Evaluation Hub), received a CIHR scholarship for her research proposal Vivre avec une maladie rare, complexe, multi-systémique et douloureuse: Cartographie du parcours de vie avec un trouble héréditaire du tissu conjonctif (THTC).

Hanna Hamoud-Michel, PhD candidate in Ali Ahmadi’s team (Imaging and Engineering research theme), received a NSERC scholarship for her thesis Targeted Sampling, Microencapsulation and In-Situ Cultivation: A Novel Approach to Understanding the Gut Microbiota.

“A big congratulations to our four Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship recipients. Their success is evidence of the excellence, engagement and brilliance of our student community. As Associate scientific director of Student and postdoctoral affairs at CRCHUM, I am proud to see their work recognized at the national level,” says Nathalie Grandvaux, researcher.

Overview

In honour of Major-General Georges P. Vanier, the first francophone Governor General of Canada, the Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships program aims to attract and retain the most highly qualified doctoral students in the world. It also aims to establish Canada as a country excelling in research and higher education.

The program considers three equally weighted selection criteria: Academic Excellence, Research Potential, and Leadership (potential and demonstrated ability).
