2022 CRCHUM Awards of Excellence: the Emerging Researcher Award Goes to Dr. Madeleine Durand

Madeleine Durand

A researcher in the Innovation Hub Research Theme since 2013, Dr. Madeleine Durand currently plays a key role in the Canadian HIV Trials Network (the Canadian Institutes of Health Research), where she co-leads the specialized Clinical Care and Management Core research team.

This award is a rightful recognition of Dr. Durand’s expertise and involvement as a physician specializing in internal medicine at the CHUM, who, among other things, participated with Dr. Cécile Tremblay in putting together the first Canadian HIV and Aging Cohort. Under her leadership, this cohort became a major source of data and specimens for several research teams throughout Canada.

Recognized by her peers as a leader in HIV research, Dr. Durand has also co-managed since March 2021 the Quebec COVID-19 Biorepository, one of the most highly developed resources of its type in the world, containing data and biological specimens from more than 4,000 people.

At the Crossroads of Basic and Clinical Research

Dr. Durand was awarded the Medal of Merit by the CHUM’s Department of Medicine in acknowledgement of her exemplary involvement and contribution during the COVID-19 pandemic.

As for the quality of her research work, she has already demonstrated outstanding scientific productivity, having co-authored 99 articles since 2013, including 11 as first author and 10 as senior author, in prestigious journals such as The New England Journal of Medicine, Nature Medicine and The Lancet Respiratory Medicine.

Despite all her activities, Dr. Durand still finds time to get involved in mentoring several young physician investigators at the CRCHUM. Her selflessness has not gone unnoticed among the CRCHUM community.

For these reasons, the members of the CRCHUM’s Scientific Board have chosen her as the recipient of the 2022 Award of Excellence in the Emerging Researcher category, in recognition of her outstanding scientific contribution as a researcher whose research program has been in existence for less than ten years.

The official awards ceremony will be held in May 2023 during the CRCHUM researchers’ retreat.
