Design and Use of Viruses as Replicating Cancer Therapeutics

We are very pleased to welcome for our February CRCHUM Prestige Conference – Moderna Series the professor John Bell, a senior scientist at the Centre for Innovative Cancer Research, Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

He is also Professor, Departments of Medicine and Biochemistry, Microbiology & Immunology, University of Ottawa. His research program has focused on the development of novel viral and cell-based therapeutics for the treatment of cancer.

About the conference

Viruses have been used as vaccines for over 300 years but it is only in the last 30 years or so that they have been strategically engineered as therapeutics. Dr. Bell’s lab has focused on the development of replicating viruses as cancer therapeutics.

These so-called oncolytic viruses have the ability to selectively grow within and kill cancer cells. This field has grown tremendously in the last 10 years with over 40 companies now developing oncolytic viruses as both cancer killers and immunotherapeutics.

During the conference, Dr. Bell will discuss the work he has carried out designing and clinically testing novel virus based therapeutics

Monday, February 20, 2023 – 4 p.m. to 5 p.m.

In the three years that followed, he trained as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Ottawa and then at the Medical Research Council in London, England. He began his independent research career at McGill University in 1986 and moved to the University of Ottawa, Department of Medicine, in 1989.

He is a member of the Center for Cancer Therapeutics at The Ottawa Hospital Cancer Center, a Senior Scientist with the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute and Professor of Medicine at the University of Ottawa.

He is the Director of the Canadian Oncolytic Virus Consortium supported by a Terry Fox Program Project Grant and is the Scientific Director of BioCanRx, a Network of Centres of Excellence that aims to bring novel immune stimulating therapies to cancer patients across Canada. John Bell is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada and a Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
