At the CRCHUM Conference on March 12th, we will honour André Robidoux, M.D., who passed away on July  25, 2020, from an incurable cancer. A kind man with a great sense of humanity who was respected by his patients and colleagues, Dr. Robidoux is one of the great Canadian leaders in the field of breast cancer research. In this capacity, he greatly contributed to the advancement of clinical research in Canada and to promoting patient-centred treatment.

Dr. Robidoux was a full professor at the Université de Montréal’s Department of Surgery and a surgical oncologist at the Centre hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal (CHUM). He created and headed the Breast Cancer Research Group, thus making the CHUM Research Centre (CRCHUM) a pillar in breast cancer research in North America. For over twenty years, Dr. Robidoux also served as Vice President of the Association des médecins cliniciens chercheurs enseignants de Montréal (AMC2EM).

The chairman and founder of the McPeak-Sirois Group’s Executive Scientific Committee, Dr. Robidoux was the Scotiabank Chair in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer at the Université de Montréal for eighteen years.

At the conference, we will hear from Ms. Susan McPeak, who was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer in 2001 and was under Dr. Robidoux’s care as part of a research protocol in which she had access to state-of-the-art treatment. In 2015, along with her husband Charles Sirois, she set up a charitable organization whose mission is to fight breast cancer, the McPeak-Sirois Group for Clinical Breast Cancer Research.

Other conference guests will be Jean-Luc Senécal, M.D., and Saima Hassan, M.D., colleagues of Dr. Robidoux, who will speak about him.

Dr. Senécal is a full professor at the Université de Montréal’s Department of Medicine. The founder of the CHUM’s Connectivity Clinic, he is a researcher at the CRCHUM, where he is the founder and director of the Laboratoire de recherche en autoimmunité (LABRAI/Autoimmunity Research Laboratory). He is the holder of the Scleroderma Research Chair at the Université de Montréal. Dr. Senécal is the president of the AMC2EM and collaborated closely with Dr. Robidoux for over twenty years.

Dr. Saima Hassan is an assistant professor at the Department of Surgery in the Université de Montréal’s Faculty of Medicine, a surgical oncologist at the CHUM and an FRQS breast cancer research scholar at the CRCHUM. Dr. Robidoux had been Dr. Hassan’s clinical and academic mentor since her arrival at the CHUM and the CRCHUM in 2016. Dr. Hassan is the Scotiabank Chair in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Cancer and was awarded the Emerging Scientist Award in 2019, as part of the Engagement Award in the fight against breast cancer.

We’re hoping for a big turnout!
