The Metabolic Diseases Innovative Solutions (MeDIS) is a cluster of six CRCHUM core facilities designed to facilitate and accelerate research and activities in the field of metabolic diseases such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

The MeDIS provides collaborative R&D services to our industrial partners assisted by the expertise of CRCHUM researchers specialized in the field of metabolic diseases. In partnership with academic and industrial institutions,  MeDIS also develops new tools such as biomarkers and provides assay services for these diseases. MeDIS offers a wide range of services from analyzing samples to solutions for complete, comprehensive R&D programs. MeDIS is structured to make academic / industrial collaborations efficient and trouble-free.  Many members of the MeDIS have worked for industry and thus, we fully understand the needs and goals of industrial partners. Also, we have a proven track report of interactions with pharmaceutical & biotechnology industries.

Mission

MeDIS's mission is to provide key R&D services by helping its partners and clients to rapidly advance their studies and programs on metabolic diseases by actively harnessing the expertise and skills of renown CRCHUM investigators and researchers, as well as state of the art technology platforms. The MeDIS is therefore a unique gateway, opening the way for our partners to a wide range of services offered by the core facilities and the expertise of CRCHUM researchers.

 

MeDIS core facilities

Cellular physiology

The cellular physiology core facility specializes in the quantification of analytes (hormones, cytokines and other molecules) found in plasma/serum samples, by ELISA and AlphaLISA as well as by immunohistochemistry in tissues.

The core facility also has a Seahorse Analyzer to measure glycolytic flux and mitochondrial respiration, as well as a high content cellular imaging instrument (PerkinElmer Operetta) to quantify cellular phenotypic changes. The core facility can also, with the help of its industrial partners, develop customized ELISA, AlphaLISA and HTRF tests for new targets for screening or biomarker development.

Metabolomics

The metabolomics core facility is specialized in the quantification and analysis of key metabolites (<1,500 Daltons) and biomarkers for metabolic diseases by mass spectrometry (targeted metabolomics). Our team has already developed several methods for the quantification of many water-soluble and lipid metabolites from samples of cells, biopsies, tissues, faeces and plasma. We continuously expand our service offer by developing methods for the quantification of new metabolites. Our technical services are modular and customers can participate at various stages to reduce costs (sample preparation, HPLC, results analysis, etc.). Our services are available to researchers in academic institutions, hospitals and industrial environment.

Pharmacokinetics

The core facility offers unique expertise in the mass spectrometric quantification of xenobiotics and drugs. The instruments we use are at the cutting edge of technology and allow us to perform analyses for clinical and pre-clinical pharmacokinetic studies, tissue or cell absorption studies and accurate mass measurements. We are also specialized in drug metabolism studies.

Phenotyping of the rodents – cardiovascular

The expertise of this core facility makes it possible to offer multiple in vivo analysis services in rodents, particularly in the fields of cardiac imaging, telemetry and various types of surgeries such as the implantation of probes and mini-pumps. The platform is based on several advanced instruments and technologies such as a SkyScan micro-CT scanner, an ART Optix MX2 optical imaging system for live animal studies and an EchoMRI NMR system, in addition to the rooms and telemetry applications. Our services are available to researchers in academic institutions, hospitals and industrial environments.

Phenotyping of the rodents – metabolic

The core facility offers a range of services unique in Canada for the study of carbohydrate and energy metabolism in rodents such as routine tolerance tests (glucose, lipids, pyruvate, insulin) and metabolic cages. The platform also has exceptional expertise in performing hyperglycemic clamps as well as Hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic clamps, which are more informative than tolerance test.

Our expertise covers:

  • research projects carried out at the cellular or tissue level and on animals,
  • complete metabolic phenotyping of genetically modified rodents,
  • evaluation of the effect of pharmacological or molecular interventions on carbohydrate and/or energy metabolism in healthy rodent models or in obese or diabetic models.

All surgical procedures, metabolic tests, dosing and data analyses are carried out by our staff.
