The biosafety officer is tasked with: 

  • Advising and making usage recommendations to laboratory staff planning to handle biohazardous material; 
  • Ensuring compliance with physical requirements with respect to containment and operational practices, as described in the Canadian Biosafety Standards, for all containment areas of the CRCHUM where infectious material and toxins are handled and stored;  
  • Ensuring that the CRCHUM and its staff members comply with the terms of the Human Pathogens and Toxins Act;  
  • Developing and managing the training program;  
  • Producing and revising policies and procedures related to the management and control of biosafety and biosecurity hazards.
