Job description

We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow to join the laboratory of Réjean Lapointe on human immunology on a full-time basis, within the Cancer Axis of the Centre de recherche du Centre hospitalier de l'Université de Montréal (CHUM). The successful candidate will support the realization of various projects related to the involvement of the fungus Malassezia in human health, specifically in chronic inflammation, autoimmune diseases and cancer.

Malassezia species are amongst the most abundant fungi in humans, found in mucosal surfaces and on the skin. While Malassezia can cause damage when present in tissue (for example in Crohn’s disease and pancreatic cancer), our knowledge of Malassezia’s involvement in diseases of internal organs remains fragmented and incomplete.

Responsabilities

The main goal of the project is to identify the most effective antifungals (alone or in combination) against Malassezia. The chosen candidate will be responsible for:

  • Gene editing. Develop a gene editing method for Malassezia
  • Directed evolution. Find drug resistance mechanisms for specific FDA approved drugs (in particular artemisinin) and determine which drugs or drug combinations Malassezia have difficultly developing resistance to
  • Confirm Mincle ligands for Malassezia
  • MIC testing of drug libraries
  • Preparing Malassezia for immunology work (for example, lipid and protein extractions)

Qualifications

Applicants must have:

  • Completed doctoral studies in microbiology or biochemistry or biological sciences or a relevant field of study within the last 2 years.
  • Excellent record of scientific publication and communication
  • Interest in pursuing research in medical mycology and human immunology
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Organizational skills and effective time management
  • Experience working as part of an interdisciplinary team
  • Assets: communication skills in French and English (oral and written).

Competitive benefits

  • A competitive salary at CAD$55,000 and benefits according to CRCHUM policies; the salary will be financed by a joint Malassezia Foundations/MITACS postdoctoral research funding
  • Full-time position
  • Flexibility of schedule and work from home possible
  • Will need to be registered with a program at Université de Montréal
  • Salary and benefits according to CRCHUM policies
