Professor Vincent Larivière, UNESCO Chair in Open Science and Érudit Scientific Director, is invited to the CRCHUM IInterdisciplinary Conference on September 15. Larivière is also a professor of information science and Vice-Rector of Strategic Planning and Communications at the Université de Montréal.

The digital age has made possible a series of “open” knowledge production and dissemination practices ranging from the accessibility of research data to that of published articles and their evaluation. Yet although these practices are often grouped under the expression “open science” and have the overall goal of making science more accessible, reproducible and transparent, they follow their own logic and have been adopted to varying degrees by the scientific community. This presentation will outline the various issues associated with open science while emphasizing the issues associated with research dissemination and evaluation. It will also touch upon the question of incentives and their effects on knowledge dissemination practices, as well as examine how the current pandemic may change these practices. Finally, the presentation will explore the current benefits and trends of open-access publishing and will open a discussion on the role of researchers and editors in increasing the circulation of knowledge to better meet society’s needs.
